Sue Cove works as an Associate Consultant with Focus. This role involves leading training and providing bespoke consultancy to individual schools linked to literacy and early years. Sue has over 25 years experience in primary education as a Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 teacher, senior teacher and Acting Headteacher.
She has worked as a Primary Literacy Consultant and was Senior Primary Consultant in Cumbria. During this time Sue was involved in running ‘The Power of Reading’ project in association with the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education. A major part of her work has been the leadership and management of the very successful Communication Language and Literacy Development (CLLD) programme which focused on improving outcomes in phonics, early reading and writing in targeted schools. Intensive support and training led to results being above National and Regional expectations.
Sue specialises in synthetic phonics and reading and has led numerous training events for schools and consortia. She also works closely with individual teachers and staff teams to support planning, tracking and assessment in phonics and reading. She is recognised as an enthusiastic and knowledgeable consultant and has delivered training to students, NQTs, local school networks and Learning Support Services on Foundation Stage and KS1 Phonics, Leadership and Management of Synthetic Phonics , Support and Talk for Spelling, Guided Reading and Raising Attainment in Reading. Most recently Sue has lectured to PGCE students at the University of Cumbria on Systematic Synthetic Phonics.
