ISBN: 978-1-904469-65-0 By Clive Davies What the book does Using the seven assessment foci outlined in the QCAs Assessing Pupils Progress (APP) it takes the descriptors and breaks each one down into child friendly targets Starting at Level 1c and moving through in sub levels to 5a, the publication identifies the strand, assessment focus and description before providing -child friendly targets for each sub level. To provide even further motivation and support the publication then outlines Learning Challenges for each sub level. The publication should help teachers to focus their attention on the right area to improve reading. The child friendly targets could also form an important aid to report writing as well as helping learners recognise what they need to do next to improve. Learning Challenges The learning challenges take account of each of the seven assessment foci and provide pertinent questions for learners to use in the context of improving their reading. These sheets could form part of an individuals reading progress record or could be used with a few learners at a time. It should help staff and learners recognise strengths and weaknesses in different strands of reading. By doing so both staff and learners should be able to target improvement in the right area rather than just generically. The idea is that they provide additional incentive to help raise standards in reading Teachers can decide how best to use them. Some may just keep them for themselves to help assess progress others may want to give each child the appropriate page for the level they are seeking to achieve. The cd rom contains learning challenge charts which can be used for individual children. |
