Hindley Primary School, Wigan Case Study

Posted by: Category:

Hindley Primary School serves a mixed area in Wigan. The proportion of pupils eligible for FSM is above average. The school has a range of awards and accreditations. Ofsted graded the school outstanding.

How the school has used Focus Education

We selected the six day package offered by Focus Education. In negotiation with the consultant, two days were used to undertake joint lesson observations across the school alongside individual members of the Senior Leadership Team. Leading a staff meeting at the end of each day key findings were shared – highlighting strengths and areas for development. These became our teaching and learning targets for the academic year. We decided to use a further four days for whole school staff training – one per term plus an additional day allocated to the review of the primary curriculum. The consultant worked with the school linking each INSET to targeting our areas for school improvement. On the final day she worked alongside team leaders to explore each curriculum area.

Evaluation

The six day package we selected had a clear impact on raising standards in teaching and learning. Our appointed consultant was of an exceptionally high standard with vast experience in education as a teacher, senior leader, head teacher and inspector. As a result she was able to lead staff through a rigorous analysis of their teaching and learning, enabling them move forward by providing knowledge, understanding and key skills.
