Adrian Stygall

Adrian was a successful primary school leader for 19 years in Leeds. The first school he led saw raised standards, numbers and a better Ofsted category. After two years working as an IT adviser Adrian was asked to lead a school that was in difficulties. The school moved from ‘causing concern’ to good with some outstanding features, and with excellent value added measures.

Having worked in two schools with very challenging environments Adrian has had to take a keen interest in health and safety issues. This was particularly important through a three year complete rebuild programme, for which Adrian was the school’s leader. Through working in an area with high levels of domestic violence, and with a lifelong interest in children with social emotional and mental health additional needs, Adrian has developed an expertise in child protection. His was the first school in the country to introduce an IT-based system for recording, analysing and recording child protection concerns, indeed Adrian worked closely with the system’s developer to shape the package. This is an area in which Adrian still takes a keen interest.

Adrian has gained accreditation in team teach, as a designated lead professional for child protection, in First Aid at Word, Paediatric First Aid and with the Institute of Safety and Health. He is also an accredited Prevent trainer. Since becoming a consultant Adrian has supported a school through a complete redevelopment of all safeguarding procedures (using the Focus-Education child protection audit documentation) and supported an IT company to develop child protection procedures. He is currently developing an audit based on all the safeguarding documents cited by the DfE. Adrian sees safeguarding as encompassing anything that might affect the welfare of the child. He also believes that a school which has a strong focus on pupil welfare will naturally also take good care of staff and other school users.
