FocusMaths is essentially a scheme of work providing the spine to mathematics provision in Key Stages 1 and 2. There is an on-going formative assessment element which has been developed to help teachers assess on a daily basis.
The maths tests linked to the scheme is intended to further support teachers' own assessment. Each test has been designed to test the mathematics taught in that term. So the Autumn tests will only tests the Autumn content.
There are two papers for each term. The first is essentially arithmetic based and the second is a reasoning and thinking paper. Pupils who struggle with Paper 1 will not be required to take Paper 2.
Raw marks are given which are then translated to scaled scores which link directly to one of six positions:
- Working outside the national standard
- Working below the national standard
- Working towards the national standard
- Working at the national standard
- Working beyond the national standard (but not at greater depth)
- Working at greater depth
The intention is to help teachers follow the progress of pupils and to assess where they may find barriers to their learning and understanding.
