Descriptors have been created across all seven areas for end of nursery (or entry into reception); end of Autumn term, end of Spring term and finally, the expected level of development. The idea is that practitioners note when children meet these stages. Six highlighters can then be used to record when they attain each stage. The six areas represent each half term.
The system is aimed to help practitioners gain an insight into children's rate of progress and where gaps may be noticed.
It helps practitioners move away from a tick system or an 'I can' system and helps practitioners focus on next stage of development and helps them plan appropriate activities aimed at enabling children to meet the expected level of development in each of the seven areas.
