Does your writing curriculum provide a clear progression of skills?

This resource supports teachers and school leaders who want to create a sequenced progression of writing skills.

Focus Education has created a comprehensive overview of writing genres for each year group from nursery to year 6. The resource identifies key grammatical elements to be taught within and across year groups. It includes progressive small steps in learning to support children in achieving the end-of-year expectations.

This document provides a progressive, incremental framework to support the teaching of writing. Fiction, non-fiction, and poetry opportunities have been identified for each year group and each half term, which link to the end-of-year expectations that need to be met. Each unit includes specific features that need to be taught and applied within the children's writing. Features not in bold should be prior learning for the children, and bold features are the new learning that needs to be taught. These features are built up over the year and across year groups. Whilst some features have been identified as new learning, these are flexible and must be based on assessments to ensure that all skills are secured.

The identified units should be taught but the content is flexible to meet the needs of the cohort and must be determined by assessments and children's knowledge of the content area.

The writing structure needs to be followed to ensure that the components build up to the composites to avoid gaps in learning.
