P. 3

This set of training material has been carefully designed to provide a comprehensive
introduction to the role of teaching assistant in primary settings.

The first section comprises the training material for the teaching assistant. It is based on
seven units of work designed to take between four and a half and seven and a half hours
to complete.

The units, listed overleaf, comprise of a range of information, links to relevant websites
and tasks to be completed, often based on policies and practice with the school itself. As
a result the material enables the teaching assistant to acquire bespoke knowledge and
understanding relevant to their workplace but set within the wider educational context.

Each unit includes at least one task to be completed by the teaching assistant

A wealth of film clips are provided on the accompanying DVD. These form the basis of
many of the tasks throughout the units. They also provide a useful resource for reflection
and additional CPD within the school.

The second section is designed to be used by the mentor or manager who is working with
the teaching assistant. It includes a copy of each of the tasks that the teaching assistant
will complete together with assessment criteria with which to evaluate the responses and
to begin professional dialogue.

Although designed to be worked, through consecutively the units can be used
separately or chosen to support an individuals professional development needs.
