As a professional working in a school or academy it is important to understand the structure of education in
England, how settings are organised and how the role of a teaching assistant has developed to fit within
these organisations. (Note: Scotland and Wales have different structures and curriculum). This understanding
of ‘the bigger picture’ will put the subsequent units into context.
The learning outcomes for this unit are: As a result you will:
1A Key Stages and Assessment: Early Years o Know how the curriculum in your school is
through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 organised in Key Stages, and when and
1B How school staffing is organised how statutory assessments take place.
1C School policies and procedures
1D The wider context in which schools operate o Know the staffing structure in your school or
setting, especially how it relates to
teaching assistants.
o Understand the importance of school
policies and how they underpin and ensure
consistent practice throughout a setting.
o Understand which organisations and
agencies interact with the school and the
respective roles they play.
