Creating a long-term plan
Long term plans
? If we have two age groups in one class, say Years 1 and 2, then it is important to
create a two-year cycle. This is a similar process for Years 3 and 4 and also Years 5
and 6.
? The following plans have science, geography or history as the main driver and art and
design technology as the enhancer. In other words the main theme is scientific,
geographical or historical but each unit should provide a link to art or DT.
? Although the long-term plans sets out what should be covered in autumn, spring and
summer, this is not written in stone and you can be as flexible as you like. The cycles
set out through this publication are merely suggestions. Be aware that some of the
coverage has been carefully linked with a term, e.g., growing and the summer term.
? Similarly, if you wish to change some of coverage in the cycles please do so.
However, be careful with the balance that has been created each year.
? The long term plans provide a two year cycle in science and a two year cycle in
geography/ history. In many cases there are alternatives so that you have choices.
? The coverage has been very faithful to the 2014 National Curriculum and will
guarantee coverage of the national curriculum if followed as set out.
