Introduction



          This toolkit has been written to support middle leaders in developing their role in a school or

          academy.



          Middle leadership can include:



          o    Phase leaders e.g. Key Stage leader or Early Years leader

          o    Subject leader or subject coordinator
          o    Leaders ‘shadowing’ a subject or phase leader



          It is not suggested that the book is necessarily read sequentially from cover to cover; rather
          that it can be used to support specific areas that a middle leader or group of middle
          leaders are focusing upon.



          The sections throughout the book include sets of questions that middle leaders may find
          useful, to encourage reflection and research into current practice in the school or setting.



          The book also includes a number of quick audit tools, again designed to enable middle
          leaders to develop their knowledge of existing practice. These audits could be re-visited at
          a later date to help measure the impact of any work.
