Introduction

Middle leadership is specifically mentioned in the Ofsted handbook for inspecting schools

in England under section 5, 2019.

The relevant quotes below may be useful for school leaders to consider when evaluating
the role of their middle leadership team who have a curriculum leadership role and their
          respective training and development needs.

          ‘Joint visits to lessons

One element of the inspection approach will be visits to lessons. The lead inspector will
invite the headteacher, curriculum leaders and other leaders to take part in joint visits to
          lessons.

Inspectors will not take a random sample of lessons to visit. Instead, they will connect lesson
visits to other evidence: discussions with curriculum leaders, teachers and pupils, and work
scrutiny. Inspectors will visit several lessons in which the same subject is being taught,
including lessons to different year groups.’
