Introduction

The starting point for middle leaders will of course differ between individuals.

Colleagues may have been appointed internally and already know about many aspects

of the school or setting. Other colleagues may be new appointments to the school and will
be starting with a blank canvas in terms of their knowledge of the setting.

The sections try and take this into account and provide options depending on experience
and existing knowledge, but discretion should be used to decide on what will be most
          useful to specific individuals.

The book could also be used as the basis for an all-through training course for middle
leaders with the questions and audits forming the course work. It may be useful for
colleagues to work collaboratively through sections of the book if it is used in this way,
building a collective understanding of the issues and actions they decide to take within
          their own leadership remits.
