This half-day course is ideal for primary headteachers and anyone else involved in producing or updating the self-evaluation summary.

The course will explain how inspectors use a school’s self-evaluation as a key piece of evidence and the role it plays as part of the inspection process. What makes an effective self-evaluation will be explored using a range of anonymised examples from schools that have recently been inspected. These will be provided to attendees as part of the course materials. This will enable attendees to reflect on their own self-evaluation format and is a really useful element of the training because self-evaluations are rarely shared between schools. Seeing examples of other formats and ways of presenting the information can inform revision of an existing self-evaluation. For colleagues who are starting their self-evaluation from scratch a suggested blank pro forma is also part of the course materials which is aligned with the Ofsted handbook.

The training will help you update and revise, or produce, an up-to-date SES document that is aligned with the latest Ofsted handbook and grade descriptors.

Objectives

  • The session will address the following:

  • What might inspectors be looking for in a SES?

  • Is your school’s context being fully addressed?

  • How do we keep the ‘evaluation’ in self-evaluation?

  • Does our SES ‘stack up’ and meet the Ofsted criteria of being ‘succinct and accurate’?

  • What are the common strengths and also the pitfalls of self-evaluation?

In response to feedback from delegates who have attended our online courses, the course content is delivered mainly through explanation and a didactic approach by the course leader. There are opportunities throughout the courses for delegates to ask questions, contribute ideas and share opinions. Course leaders will respond to any comments in ‘Chat’ thoughout the course. We realise that some delegates prefer a more activity-based approach to CPD, with tasks and directed Q&A sessions, but the large majority of our attendees prefer the former type of delivery. We are also aware that this normally better suits the training we are providing e.g. briefings about Ofsted.

Please be aware of this when considering booking. Thank you.
