Developing the Skills and Effectiveness of Teaching Assistants

This one-day training develops the skills of primary school teaching assistants so they are better able to support teaching and learning and therefore improve outcomes for children.

The day focuses on the role of the teaching assistant in enabling progress and helping pupils learn key skills and develop knowledge and understanding. The progression towards mastery and greater depth is covered.

The training includes activities and film clips that enable delegates to discuss ideas and reflect on their practice. The use of the Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants to support professional development is explained, and delegates gain an understanding of how the standards can underpin their ongoing professional development.

The training addresses:

  • the role of the teaching assistant in supporting learning
  • progression in learning towards mastery and greater dept
  • the importance of questioning in developing pupils’ understanding
  • how the Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants can be used in practice
  • what is understood by the ‘Keeping up and not Catching up’ (KUNCU) principle

 

Developing Middle Leaders

This one-day training is for newly appointed and recently appointed middle leaders in primary schools, i.e., colleagues new to subject or phase leadership.

‘Developing Middle Leadership’ will provide middle leaders who are new to this role with an overview of expectations within their setting. Delegates will learn about the key aspects of the middle leadership role and be ready to apply them in their school.

Delegates will gain clarity and understanding about how to contextualise their work and ensure they can begin to impact standards across their leadership remit.

With middle leadership being a key focus on many inspections, this training can be helpful for schools preparing for Ofsted.

The training will address:

  • Why is a school’s context so important, and what are our key issues for improvement?
  • What does a day in the life of a vulnerable pupil look like?
  • What do Ofsted’s new buzzwords of ‘achieve’, ‘belong’ and ‘thrive’ mean in the context of middle leadership?
  • What is the starting point for a middle leader?
  • What do monitoring and evaluation look like in practice?
  • How can middle leaders improve outcomes for pupils?

Developing Subject Leadership

‘Developing Subject Leadership’ will provide primary subject leaders who are new to this role with an overview of expectations within the context of their setting.

Delegates will learn about the key aspects of the subject leadership role ready to take back to their primary schools.

They will gain clarity and understanding about how to put their work into context and ensure they impact standards across their leadership remit.

With subject leadership a focus during inspections, this training will benefit schools preparing for Ofsted.

The training will focus on:

  • ensuring that the subject they lead has a clear intent
  • knowing what pupil age-related expectations are on a year-by-year basis
  • having the skills to monitor pupil progress
  • making the most of ‘book looks’ and pupil voice
