This publication provides teachers in Years 1 and 2 with ideas for developing pupils' mastery skills in maths.
The range of books is intended to be used alongside units of mathematics that are ongoing in the classroom. For example, when pupils are being taught 'Place Value,' teachers could choose an appropriate question to help deepen their understanding of that aspect of mathematics. Importantly, these should be used with all pupils, not just the most able.
They should also be interwoven into everyday mathematics lessons, not just left until the end of each unit.
The examples have been split into different areas to help teachers plan. Naturally, some examples cover more than one area.
The questions are simply exemplars, and teachers are encouraged to develop questions similar to those outlined in this booklet.
The questions take account of the need for pupils to 'think harder' and to use their reasoning skills.
