A huge part of teaching geography is developing skills in fieldwork. The National Curriculum states that it aims to ensure children can, “collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes”.
Fieldwork can begin simply within your own school grounds, then around your local area and built into school trips and visits to geographical features further afield. Real geography is understanding the world around us by observing those human and physical features and determining the impact that both nature and humans have on our world. Through fieldwork, we can support children’s growing geographical knowledge by giving them real-world experiences.
The training considers:
- What constitutes good fieldwork;
- Where fieldwork can take place;
- How we can develop children’s knowledge through the use of fieldwork;
- Using field sketching to enhance learning in geography.
