Watch a video all about the Learning Challenge Curriculum

Our flagship curriculum helps you create your own bespoke curriculum, using the many resources, including schemes of work, that we have produced to support you.

The Learning Challenge Curriculum is an enquiry-based curriculum that encourages pupils to retain key knowledge for the long term. It helps them to gain knowledge related to the unit being studied (substantive knowledge) as well as ensuring their disciplinary knowledge grows, so deepening their subject-specific understanding.

This curriculum provides a logical sequence of learning and detailed planning for science, history, geography, design and technology, and art. The National Curriculum is the reference point for each subject, but there is a huge focus on oracy and an encouragement for pupils to present their learning in an eloquent and cohesive manner. With the support of their subject leaders, teachers can adapt the original plans if they wish, making the curriculum bespoke to the school.

For each of the five subjects, the sequence runs from early years through to Year 6. Each unit starts with the overarching question (composite) and subsidiary questions (components), aimed at helping pupils to answer it. Effectively, the unit of learning for each subject supports pupils’ learning and their ability to remember key information in that subject.

Each unit covers half a term, with the component questions expected to be the focus of a week’s work.

Each unit ensures time spent igniting prior knowledge (link it), a focus on the new learning (learn it), regular checkpoints to ensure children are keeping up (check it), an opportunity for pupils to reflect on their learning, including presenting their learning to others (show it), and retrieval activities after the learning (know it). The following document shows these stages in greater detail.
