This publication is aimed at teachers who work with mixed-aged classes. The outline includes all the units available as short-term plans from Focus Education.
When considering the planning for mixed-aged groups, we have taken account of the coverage of the 2014 National Curriculum, which provides some support and direction in terms of the substantive and disciplinary knowledge pupils should acquire as they move through the school.

We have predominantly focused on teachers working with Years 1 and 2 together (but also support those working with reception, Year 1 and 2 together), Years 3 and 4 together and Years 5 and 6 together. So, we have created two-year cycles to ensure no pupil replicates the coverage.

There is an appreciation that some teachers work with different combinations, e.g., Years 2 and 3. Although these year groups are not explicitly outlined, the system used here could be replicated for any combined-age group. The Focus Education consultants are pleased to support schools with different age groups.  Contact our customer services for more pricing information.

For geography planning, the disciplinary knowledge we wish pupils to acquire remains in year groups, with the content remaining the same for the mixed-aged group. For example, the coverage theme is the same for both age groups, but the disciplinary knowledge is set out hierarchically. In geography, we have ensured that the disciplinary knowledge is set out for each age group whilst the theme being covered remains the same for each mixed-aged group. Therefore, disciplines such as mapping, fieldwork sketching, and data collection are set out in year groups, while the theme is the same for both age groups.

The early years examples link Key Stage 1 with the development matters document, so the planning sequence starts in EYFS and moves on to Year 6.
