Description

This Focus Mini provides primary teachers with guidance when planning and teaching mathematical reasoning, problem-solving and the associated communication of skills and knowledge. Mathematical reasoning has been identified as the 'weakest link' in many schools' implementation of the maths programme of study, and this publication provides support for each class teacher in planning to ensure clear progress.

The first section summarises relevant sections, quotes from the Ofsted handbook, and research from the National Centre for Excellence in Mathematics.

The second section provides a simple progression in mathematical reasoning and a suggested range of problems.

The third section is a set of progressive stages of reasoning, problem-solving and communication that can be used to support planning and teaching. It ensures that pupils meet the expected standard by the end of key stage one and again at the end of key stage two.
