Science trailers are designed as an alternative, or as an addition, to knowledge organisers. The major difference is the way the information is set out, making it more attractive, motivating, and inspiring for children.

What are they?
The trailers contain the key information children need to be ready to receive new knowledge about a specific study in science. They focus on the substantive knowledge children are expected to learn within a specific unit but also consider the main science enquiry to be covered. In addition, they introduce children to a famous scientist who has had a major influence on the topic being looked at. The scientists are drawn from diverse backgrounds.

How do trailers differ from knowledge organisers?
For many, knowledge organisers are a quandary, becoming a demarcation page dividing the new unit from the last and looked at occasionally for reminders. The trailers, however, contain information that is imparted before the main learning begins. In this way, they provide learners with prior knowledge, preparing the brain for the learning that is to follow. They could be homework activities handed out on the last day of term or half term before the unit is taught, hopefully engaging parents in the learning. Or they could be the focus of the first lesson, so that children have key information about the period studied before addressing new knowledge.

What do they contain?
As with knowledge organisers, trailers focus on the key knowledge that children are about to learn. They attempt to ignite prior knowledge and contain important Tier 3 vocabulary. There is a link to an internet site, an interesting fact for bright children, sentence stems, and a focus on the main learning within the unit.

Why have them?
Building beyond knowledge organisers in the learning cycle, science trailers are there to support initial key learning and are useful bite-sized knowledge introductions. They can make a substantial difference to pupils’ long-term knowledge retention.
