Teaching History through Concepts (S) (CPD Video: 25min)

The consultants here at Focus Education have prepared a range of short CPD videos on current and relevant themes. These videos are great starters for any staff meeting or twilight session. Pause, rewind and share with staff in your school.

The National Curriculum states, "A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world." It also states, "It should inspire pupils' curiosity to know more about the past." To ensure that depth of knowledge and understanding and inspire curiosity, children need to be shown the links between different time periods and historical peoples - the golden threads, if you like.

Various substantive concepts run throughout the National Curriculum. We want children to focus on these' big ideas' to identify and make links between different aspects of history.

The video refers to these concepts:

• Chronology
• Continuity and change
• Cause and consequence
• Similarity and difference
• Significance

While these substantive concepts are fundamental, further concepts that will already be running through your curriculum can be explored. For example, the concepts of 'empire', 'farming' or 'trade'. We can use these concepts to teach history in a way that brings it to life and supports pupils learning year on year.

The video considers:

• How well do you understand and know the historical concepts within your curriculum?
• How can these concepts be built into existing history topics?
