This mini publication has been written to provide primary teachers with guidance when planning and teaching mathematical reasoning, problem solving and associated communication of skills and knowledge. Mathematical reasoning has been identified as the 'weakest link' in terms of many schools' implementation of the maths programme of study and this publication provides support for each class teacher in planning to ensure clear progress.
The first section summarises relevant sections and quotes from the latest Ofsted handbook and research from the National Centre for Excellence in Mathematics.
The second section provides a simple progression in mathematical reasoning and a suggested range of problems.
The third section is a set of progressive stages of reasoning, problem solving and communication which can be used to support planning and teaching, ensuring pupils are meeting the expected standard by the end of key stage one and again at the end of key stage two.
