We suggest using these videos over two or three staff meetings or for a CPD training day.
The focus is on creating your own speaking and listening curriculum to improve the quality of children’s oracy across the school, although we recommend purchasing the ‘Focus on Talk’ oracy package to help with this. There is a separate set of sentence stems for different subjects, which can make a difference to the way children present their knowledge.

The curriculum for speaking and listening covers four areas:
o    Being Impressive and Confident presenters
o    Using Excellent Standard English
o    Improving and Increasing Vocabulary
o    Being Attentive Listeners

The videos focus on how to improve children’s presentation skills, with down-to-earth, practical examples included. There are sets of protocols suggested, and the accompanying handout materials can remind children about them.

There are examples of how sets of children have been involved in a step-by-step process that has really improved their presentational skills. There are also examples of sentence stems across different subjects included in the handout materials.

There are ‘Talkability’ principles supporting children’s use of Standard English; a system where each phase, starting with EYFS, identifies phrases that teachers frequently hear from the children that are not grammatically correct, e.g., ‘I go toilet’ or ‘me toilet’. Starting with EYFS, the advice is to focus on four or five phrases to model correctly. These then become ‘zero-tolerance’ phrases in the next phase, etc.

The third and fourth sections focus on vocabulary and listening. There are charts included to help with ‘good listening’ and activities that support improvement in children’s vocabulary. Many schools have already created their own ideas around vocabulary, but these thoughts will enhance their work.
