Vocabulary plays a key role in teaching. For children to be successful in learning and in life, we need to make it our mission to support them in developing as broad a vocabulary as possible. Extensive work is being done around oracy and speaking and listening, and vocabulary is just a small part, but it’s a vitally important element if we want children to articulate themselves effectively.
Within this publication, we will explore:
• the notion of tiers of vocabulary and why this applies to the wider curriculum
• teaching vocabulary across all phases, including the Early Years
• effective use of dual coding (including creating communication-friendly classrooms)
• the difference between substantive and disciplinary vocabulary
• how to develop a progressive approach to teaching vocabulary.
You will be pointed toward Beck and McKeown, Bloom and Lahey, and Marzano for a better understanding of the rationale behind developing vocabulary. There is also a range of examples of strategies and resources to help you develop a progressive approach towards vocabulary across your wider curriculum.
