With more 2-year-olds being admitted into mainstream schools, this booklet aims to help practitioners look for progression as children move through the foundation stage of their educational life.

It starts with the progression anticipated for 2-year-olds in the following areas:
* language;
* gross-motor;
* fine-motor;
* social; and
* cognitive.

In addition, the booklet considers the progress that children make, term-by-term, as they move through nursery in the seven areas of development: communication and language; physical development; personal and social development; literacy; mathematics; understand the world; and expressive arts and design.

The progression within reception (also using the seven areas of development) as outlined here, is more familiar, but our version is included to show the journey children make towards a Good Level of Development.

This need is heightened with the target that at least 75% of children are expected to get there by the end of reception. Although this may vary slightly across different local authorities.

It is important we recognise that measuring progress for very young children cannot be an exact science, but the booklet offers guidance and support for practitioners looking at next steps.
