Description
This publication aims to help senior leaders, including governors, check the effectiveness of leadership in their school or academy.
It looks at 16 crucial and current aspects of school leadership and helps leaders assess their practice against each one using the proposed Ofsted structure of five main graded areas, from exemplary to causing concern. Although the five descriptors use Ofsted’s judgements, it is important to recognise that these are key areas of leadership, and the use of the five judgements is merely guidance.
First, leaders make a judgement against one of the 16 chosen categories, e.g., ‘To what extent has the school’s leadership created a culture of togetherness?’ They are then invited to turn to the equivalent section later in the document, which challenges their judgement through a series of questions. To do this, leaders need to decide on their initial judgement. They then challenge themselves with the questions set out and make any appropriate adjustments. They could then use their original description and amend it to personalise it, taking account of the outcomes from the questions set out.
Using this process, a self-evaluation document could be ready quickly and efficiently, or it could provide senior leaders with a structure to have invaluable discussions during senior leaders’ meetings.
