This is what most senior leaders have been waiting for. Almost 10 years ago, we put together a very much sought-after publication which tried to look at the then new requirements of the National Curriculum. Although helpful in its day, it is now a publication that needs updating.
Since those early days, we have a better understanding of substantive knowledge and disciplinary knowledge. We also recognise the importance of oracy in our curriculum and the ability of children to explain their understanding in a more coherent and precise way. This, together with outlining the key 'sticky' knowledge for each subject, has been an important part of the pedagogical focus of the past five years or so.
So, what does this publication do?
First, it sets out annual expectations for each subject starting with EYFS and going on to the end of Year 6 (the only exception is Foreign Language, which is Key Stage 2 only).
Second, it provides a clear set of key vocabulary expectations across all subjects, so that children can access appropriate learning as they progress through the school.
Third, in most subjects, where it is relevant, we have added sentence stems children can use to improve their presentation skills when speaking about each subject.
Fourth, with DT, we have included examples of outcomes that can help set a high standard in terms of completed tasks by different age groups.
Fifth, with art, we have broken down the expectations for a sketchbook. This is something many schools request guidance on, and we hope the exemplar will provide this.
Finally, this resource is not for use as a tick sheet for assessment, but it provides a realistic expectation for staff when pitching subject content. For subject leaders, it should prove an invaluable asset as you review your subject's expectations.
We sincerely hope that this publication will not just prove helpful but will save you considerable time in your curriculum planning and implementation.
