Retrieval Examples Specific to History
Retrieval Examples Specific to History
Description
Format: eBook
The history retrieval activities are intended to support pupils' historical knowledge. They are designed as 10-, 15- or 20-minute activities to be taken at different times throughout the year. The aim is to support pupils' long-term memory and help them to 'know more and remember more'.
The activities link directly to the history programmes of study for key stages 1 and 2. However, as you know, the national curriculum does not specify what should be taught each year; instead, it presents the study programmes on a key-stage basis. Therefore, consider using the activities with a different age group than that specified, according to when they were taught the unit of learning.
You will notice that the retrieval activities include coverage from previous years. For example, chronological knowledge about different periods is repeated for years after the direct teaching to help them recall key knowledge and information.
There is a suggested point system so that you can build up a profile of pupils meeting the expectations in history for their year group. In this way, the resource could be a useful part of an assessment tool that determines where there are gaps in pupils' knowledge and acknowledges whether they are at the stage of learning that they should be for their age.
