Designed to support children’s understanding and knowledge at the beginning of a new history unit of learning, these attractively presented resources have three main purposes:

•    To support children’s reading
•    To inspire readiness for new learning
•    To support children’s long-term retention of key knowledge

The ‘Links’ are short but informative pieces of text aimed at immersing children in the history unit of learning they are about to meet. Created to motivate and inspire curiosity, they can help teachers capture children’s interest in the learning to come.

Key Stage 1 children should follow the ‘echo’ reading system. The teacher animatedly reads a sentence at a time, and then the children read together in response. The aim is to ensure they employ great intonation and expression in their reading.

The aim for Key Stage 2 children is to create a choral reading opportunity, with the teacher deciding how much of the reading to cover before stopping and adding explanations. One of the main reading outcomes should be fluency.

At both key stages, teachers should point out and talk about in advance any new vocabulary, especially subject related vocabulary, that children will meet.

Used regularly as an introduction to each new history unit, the Links will secure children’s pre-knowledge and prepare their brains’ readiness to receive new information. Used together with the new history trailers, they will provide a positive, motivating, and powerful introduction to new learning.
